ANGELA LATHAM. VOCAL MASTERY.

2009

You might hear her singing her own soulful pop tunes on a college radio station in Oregon, California, New York or Texas. You might hear her belting out the national anthem at the next Lakers game. Or singing at the Montreal International Jazz festival. Or on the latest L’Oreal commercial. That’s because Angela Latham has the voice of a star who can color her tone to any mood, expression or stage.

Training. Her early vocal training began in school and church, singing in choirs and soloing in holiday productions. She learned to sing harmony by ear standing beside her mother in church as she sang harmonies in alternating registers. Angela was influenced by gospel music and vocal styling and became recognized for her soulful expressions, resulting in an invitation to record in LA with a major record label executive at age 16. She began a formal music and vocal training in high school and was soon singing in festivals and competitions at a regional level.

Almost by accident Angela ended up at the Vancouver Academy of Music on scholarship studying opera as a vocal performance major. During her studies, she competed at a national level, representing British Columbia at the Canadian National Music Festival, having won her place out of ten thousand participants. She sang and competed in New York, California, and all across Canada winning numerous prizes and distinctions. She was sang as a principal soloist for the University of British Columbia Orchestra. Finally, before her graduation from college, she had her professional debut with the Vancouver Modern Baroque Opera Orchestra starring as a principal role Nicolai Porporra’s Angelica and Medoro.

After college she toured with a 60 piece big band/swing band as the featured song bird. She did so, embracing the opportunity to completely immerse herself into the 40’s jazz era. Soon after that, she headed out east and fronted a popular Montreal Hip-hop reggae, R&B, funk band, playing the International Jazz Festival, the Formula One Concert series as well as many other of Montreal’s hottest music venues.

Writing. In Montreal after singing with the (mostly cover) band for about  two years, she got the creative spark and began writing, picking up the guitar which she had been neglecting through college. In a short period of time she was setup in her bedroom of her Montreal apartment with basic recording gear and began what would be the beginning of her recording career. Within a short few months she had submitted a song to the local Montreal pop station and won a spot on a compilation album promoted by them as well as having some radio airplay. Shortly after, she hit the road touring across the States in her car, singing and handing out demos. Eventually, she landed in LA and got her start singing on the Third Street Promenade, downtown Santa Monica. She has now recorded over one hundred songs, and has released her debut album “Everything”. She collaborates regularly with established writers and producers, writing for movie projects and other artists. She writes hooks for hip-hop artists and rappers, and does vocal arrangements/harmonies for established pop and gospel artists. She sang on the latest L’ Oreal television commercial and most recently on the latest Robert Randolph and the Family Band album, working with renowned and internationally acclaimed producer T-Bone Burnett. She also recently performed on The View, Good Morning America, The Early Show, David Letterman and Ellen Degeneres with Jessica Simpson, and will be singing background vocals for Jessica on her 08 tour.

Angela is currently writing and producing her second album, playing shows in the LA area with her band Angela Latham and the Payphone Loveless. She has three songs being released in feature films this year.
